Turning is a form of processing, or a process of cutting material, in which we use a turning machine (lathe), the workpiece being turned, a clamp, and cutting tools. A piece of preformed material (the workpiece) is attached to a lathe and prepared for high-speed rotation.
The cutter, mounted in the machine, is guided onto the rotating workpiece and cuts the material by removing tiny chips in order to create the desired shape. Due to its rotation, these are generally axially symmetrical, and the workpiece often also contains components that are used in limited quantities.
Due to its high tolerances and surface treatment, turning is ideal for adding precise rotational functions to a part whose basic shape has already been formed.
